MAKING MINDFULNESS A PART OF YOUR ROUTINE
We know we need to do something daily for our physical health but what about our mental health? With the term Mindfulness becoming more mainstream, it is important that we evaluate why it is important to incorporate this practise into our already busy lifestyles.
Mindfulness can be an extremely useful technique to implement in the workplace helping us to manage feelings of stress and anxiety, fatigue and burnout, helping to build more effective and strong working relationships whilst increasing our productivity, cognition and resilience.
At CCW we are all about “prevention is better than the cure”, so implementing good mental health practises such as meditation will help prevent future problems such as chronic stress, anxiety and even more serious conditions such as depression.
3 Simple Mindful Exercises you can carry out daily for 5-10 minutes
Breathing with awareness - find a comfortable position either seated or lying down and then just gently close the eyes and start to focus on your breathing. Pay attention to how the belly rises and falls. Notice how the air might feel cool as you inhale through the nose and then warmer as you exhale back through the nose. Allow yourself to start noticing other sensations across the body as you sit and simply breathe. Finally, move your focus to your mind and the thoughts that may be coming in and out. Try to imagine that they are simply like a cloud drifting across the sky and allow them to gently pass without judgement, simply letting them go.
Looking with awareness - choose a simple object nearby maybe a flower/candle/book etc. and then give it your full focus and attention. Try to look at it as if for the first time and really absorb all the different formations, colours, textures and shapes within it. Allow yourself to be ultimately consumed by the presence of the object. Admire and appreciate the beauty in it and consider its purpose.
Gratitude journaling - start by writing down 5 things in your life that you feel thankful for. By taking the time to do that it can help us to really appreciate those things more. If at any time throughout the day we feel stressed or overwhelmed we can refer back to this list as a reminder of the positive aspects of our lives we are acknowledging. We all have our ups and down but through practising reflection and gratitude we can help ourselves to accept the difficult times with grace and understanding and to feel thankful for the good.
