There are many nutrients that can help sustain a healthy immune system. Here are some foods you should keep on the lookout for on your next shop:
Vitamin C : is an essential antioxidant and water soluble vitamin that plays a significant role in supporting the immune system: They can be found in foods such as citrus fruits, kiwi fruit, strawberries, broccoli, cabbage and parsley
Vitamin D: Plays a very important role in defending your body from any disease or infection. It can be found in fish, orange juice, soy milk, cheese, egg yolks, mushrooms.
*be aware that if you are working inside all the time you could be at risk from vitamin D deficiency. So next time it’s sunny outside try and do some remote work in the sun.
Probiotic rich foods: These are living microorganisms that can help inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria that could decrease your immune systems response to viruses. Found in all naturally fermented soy products, dairy and vegetables Although found naturally in fermented soy products, dairy and vegetables (e.g. tempeh, yoghurt and sauerkraut).
Zinc: This can help control infections by encouraging a slower response to an outburst in inflammation. Found in foods like red meat, chicken, fish, dairy foods, eggs, legumes and sunflower and pumpkin seeds.
Olive Leaf Extract: This supplement is high in polyphenols, which are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. You can buy this at your local chemist, pharmacy, organic health food store.
Remember that creating healthier food choices can support your immunity. So while you have the time, getting creative with these foods can help you make long-lasting healthy habits.
